Homemade Vanilla Extract

Artful Maven

Give the gift that gives back a few more times with homemade Vanilla Extract. It's fabulous to bake with, and even flavors coffee nicely, and it's so easy to make. All you need is time and a few ingredients!

Supplies: To Make 2 Dozen Bottles

  • 2 to 4 Ounce Sized Bottles with Lids
  • 8 Ounce Bag of Madagascar Vanilla Beans
  • Funnel
  • 3 1.75 Liters of Vodka
  • Computer Generated Labels

Madagascar Vanilla Beans are of excellent quality, and the flavor is wonderful. Take 6 Vanilla Beans from the bag, and trim the ends off of each bean. Split them length wise down the center, and place all of them in to a bottle. Repeat this for each bottle. Using a funnel, pour the vodka into the jars. Cap them tightly, and store them in a dark place to macerate. Every few days, shake the bottles vigorously, and continue to do this over a six week period.

Make computer generated labels with instructions for making more Vanilla after the bottle is empty. Your recipient can make more Vanilla about three times with the same beans, adding more Vodka in and shaking and waiting for about six weeks.

Make labels for the front of the bottle as well. This is a gift all the bakers in your life will love.
