Get To Know: Wild Whimsy Woolies

Justine Durrant

Linda creates the cutest little creatures from wool! She doesn't use a pattern and all of her creatures are unique and original, which we really love!

A word from the designer:

My name is Linda and I'm a self-taught maker and needle felter. I love animals and hold degrees in Zoology and Biodiversity & Conservation. After taking the scientific route in my post-secondary studies and working office jobs in the environmental sector, I wanted to find a hobby where I could get back to my creative side and also make heartfelt handmade gifts for friends and my growing number of nieces and nephews. I decided to try needle felting because it used all natural materials and just required wool and some tiny barbed needles. I fell in love with needle felting as soon as I started and decided to launch Wild Whimsy Woolies to share my creations with the rest of the world. Taking inspiration from nature and wildlife, I love to create cute whimsical animals that I hope put a smile on people's faces.

While I usually have an idea of what I want my needle felted creatures to look like in my head, I also like to let them come to life organically as I'm sculpting with the wool. I rarely work from sketches, and like to see my critters take shape as I go. As there are no patterns in needle felting, every piece I make is one of a kind and each takes on its own unique personality.

A word from the Maker Heart team:

Thank you for sharing your world of woolies with us Linda! You are very talented and we hope to see more from you on Maker Heart in the future.
